Strategic Partners to launch Startup Accelerator in Thunder Bay

Tuesday October 1, 2013 – The Northwestern Ontario Innovation Centre, in partnership with the Thunder Bay Community Economic Development Commission (CEDC), Thunder Bay Ventures, and local angel investors, is proud to announce Costarter, the first startup accelerator in Northwestern Ontario.

Teams of entrepreneurs from across the region will apply for five slots in a three-month, intensive, and mentor driven business development program to accelerate product development, customer acquisition and company growth. These teams will relocate to the Innovation Centre from January to March and work closely with in-house staff and mentors to build their businesses.

Judy Sander, manager of the Northwestern Ontario Innovation Centre states, “We are very excited to be offering this program to Northwestern Ontario. Although, we currently offer our services to any individual or business in the region, this strategic partnership allows our Centre to provide the teams with the financial means to bring their product idea to life.”

Selected teams will receive a cash investment of $15,000 in order to further develop their idea or prototype for market readiness. Teams will be selected for the program by a panel of judges based on business viability, the quality of the team and the potential for growth.

“As we continue to diversify our Thunder Bay economy, it is important that we support, nurture and train selected entrepreneurs to start-up and become successful. The CEDC is pleased to be a major partner in bringing an accelerator program to Northwestern Ontario, building on and improving what has been done in other cities.” says Doug Murray, CEO of the CEDC.
