"Inspiring Change - Creating Opportunities" Speaker Series

Keynote Speaker: Mike Gordon, Vice President and Manager of Supply Chain, Bantrel

Key topics include: 

  • Why is the demand for qualified fabrication suppliers ramping up again in Western Canada?
  • How can the Thunder Bay Metal Fabricators Association (TBMFA) position itself to seize opportunities from MEGA projects in the oil sands, potash and uranium sectors?
  • Get the real story on fabrication opportunities from a 14-year Bantrel veteran.

Mike Gordon has over 25 years of EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) experience on a variety of industrial projects specializing in Procurement, Contracts, and Project Management. After graduating from Lakehead University with a Bachelor of Civil Engineering degree, Mike took on roles as a Project Engineer and Program Manager with Defence Construction in London, Ontario, managing construction projects for the Department of National Defence. Mike joined Bantrel in Calgary, Alberta in 1997 as a Project Manager on the first Oil Sands “Mega Project", Suncor Millennium. Mike moved to Bantrel’s Supply Chain Dept. in 1999, serving as Corporate Manager of Contracts and Corporate Manager of Procurement. Mike has been involved in key roles on most of Bantrel’s larger projects over the past decade and was the Vice President and Manager of Business Development for Bantrel prior to taking on his current role in 2010.

In addition to a degree from Lakehead University, Mike holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Queen’s University and a diploma in Resource Technology from Georgian College. Mike is a member of the Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO).

Keynote Speaker: Dr. Lendley C. Black, Chancellor, University of Minnesota Duluth

 

The Thunder Bay Community Economic Development Commission (CEDC), in partnership with Lakehead University, presents Dr. Lendley C. Black, Chancellor of the University of Minnesota Duluth. Chancellor Black will be speaking on the role of universities and colleges in regional economic development.

Chancellor Black began his tenure at the University of Minnesota Duluth in August of 2010. He has a long record of senior administrative experience, including nine years as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, three years as Director of Undergraduate Studies and more than three years as Director of Student Advising at Emporia State University in Emporia, Kansas. Dr. Black has a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of Tennessee at Martin, a Master of Arts degree in theatre from the University of Connecticut, and a Ph.D degree in theatre from the University of Kansas.

The Thunder Bay Community Economic Development Commission (CEDC) is hosting a free seminar on Brownfield reclamation.

The symposium is a full day session that will deliver Brownfield perspectives from Private, Municipal and Federal Government areas. Representatives from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing(MMAH), Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) and other regionally significant presenters will participate in the event.
 
The primary focus of the session will be aimed at Brownfield identification, risk assessment, financing, training tools available and eligible funding for Brownfield redevelopment/reclamation.

Summer Company Wind-up and Local Secondary School Business Competition Presentation

Summer Company is a grant program funded by the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade through the Thunder Bay & District Entrepreneur Centre. The program is designed to help enterprising young people, between the ages of 15 and 29, start and run their own summer business while continuing their education.

The Ontario Secondary School Business Plan Competition is an opportunity for Ontario high school students to create a business plan and compete with their peers throughout the province for awards of up to $2,500. Our local competition encompasses the City of Thunder Bay as well as, the areas of Atikokan to Manitouwadge and HWY 11 to Longlac.
