The City Archives is responsible for the administration of the City's Records Management Program. Current City records, in all formats, are inventoried and assigned an appropriate time frame for retention. Inactive records are retained in secure storage in the Records Centre and are available to City departments as required.
Records administered under the Records Management Program remain the property of City departments, and can only be accessed by contacting the relevant department. Records schedules are available to the public and can be consulted online or obtained by contacting or visiting the City Archives or City Hall.
The Records Management Program complies with pertinent federal and provincial legislation with respect to record keeping, designates historically significant materials for permanent retention, and identifies Corporate information that is subject to Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy legislation.
Record schedules are controlled under the authority of the City of Thunder Bay Records Retention By-law in accordance with Sections 254 and 255 of the Municipal Act, 2001 and Chapter 193 of the Thunder Bay Municipal Code. The current Records Authority By-Law is 033-2016, passed 21 March 2016.
