Recreation & Culture

The Recreation & Culture Division’s primary goal is to provide a basic level of service by providing opportunities which everyone can access and where benefits are far reaching and long term - both for the individual and community. These programs and services focus on the shared management and ownership of resources.

 

The Division operates from a strong belief in a community development approach to its work. Although some programs and services are directly provided by the Division, the majority are provided in partnership with the community. The Division collaborates and cooperates with community groups in the planning and development of recreation opportunities.

 

The core areas address key community issues and concerns, for example, the need to:

    • ensure positive opportunities for youth and increase youth participation in active, healthy lifestyles;
    • enhance the quality of life and access to opportunities for people with disabilities;
    • strengthen community identity and develop a sense of place and pride;
    • provide positive role models and develop community leadership, and;
    • provide opportunities for people of all ages to participate in recreation.
