Roads

The Roads Section maintains, inspects and carries out minor repairs on bridges and roads, sidewalks, drainage systems, traffic control signals and streetlights within the city boundaries. Roads carries out winter maintenance operations, which includes snow plowing and snow removal, as well as sanding and salting operations, to provide for safe passage of vehicles and pedestrians. Summer activities include sidewalk maintenance, dust control, roadside maintenance, drainage, bridge repairs, street sweeping, gravel patching and grading and lane maintenance.

Highlights

  • Roads carries out traffic marking (painting), asphalt patching, crack repairs, road cleaning/sweeping and shoulder maintenance on 1994 lane km of paved roadway and performs gravel maintenance and grading on 205 lane km of gravel roads
  • Performs maintenance on bridges structures and road crossing culverts and driveway culverts throughout the City
  • The Roads Section is responsible for the maintenance of 21,176 signs
  • Performs maintenance on local and trunk open drainage systems throughout the City
  • Sidewalk maintenance and repair on the City’s network of 449 km of sidewalks
  • Winter operations include roadway snow plowing, snow removal, sanding and salting and sidewalk plowing, sanding and salting
  • Traffic Control & Street Lighting maintains over 114 traffic lights and service over 12,800 street lights
