September 15, 2009 – City Council last evening ratified a two-year collective agreement with its largest bargaining unit, the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 87, which represents approximately 680 inside and outside workers. The agreement runs from Jan. 1, 2009 to Dec. 31, 2010, and provides for a 2% wage increase, effective Jan. 1, 2009, followed by a 1.5% wage increase, effective Jan. 1, 2010.
The parties met on a number of occasions earlier this year, culminating in a three-day marathon bargaining session that started on Aug. 25, held with the assistance of a Conciliation Officer.
City Manager Tim Commisso praised both bargaining committees. "Both the Union and Management bargaining teams are to be congratulated on the deal," he said. "The agreement reflects the economic realities of our City, the region and the province in general. A moderate approach towards wage increases was required, and that's what was achieved."
The benefit plan was also changed to allow for generic drug substitution when prescribed by a physician. Other changes were made which will allow more flexibility with respect to the use of seasonal staff during the summer months.
