January 11, 2010 – The City of Thunder Bay Planning Division, in cooperation with Fort William First Nation, is holding two public meetings on Jan. 21 and 30 to gather information, ideas and suggestions for the future mix of land uses within the Kam River and Mission and McKellar Islands, including the lands along both sides of the river from below Mountdale Ave. to the lakefront.
The focus of the meetings is to gather public views and suggestions on the following key questions:
- What future uses should be encouraged and permitted? And where?
- What uses should be prohibited in the future? And where?
- What conditions should be placed on the permitted uses?
The information gathered at these meetings will be used to prepare a draft report to City Council with findings and recommendations, in keeping with Initiative #71 of the Building on the New Foundation Strategic Plan to ‘develop a long term land use plan for Mission and McKellar Islands’.
“This is an appropriate time to review the potential for land use along this length of the river, and examine the linkages between the Fort William Downtown Neighbourhood and development along the Kam River,” said Mayor Lynn Peterson. “Citizens are rediscovering this area of the river that has changed so dramatically over the past 20 years.”
Many industries and much of the shipping have moved off of the river, and industrial and municipal raw sewage is no longer released into the river. The City of Thunder Bay is working in cooperation with Fort William First Nation, as much of the land along the south shore of the river is owned by the Fort William First Nation Development Corporation.
Comments from the public will be used in a final report recommending the mix of future land uses, which will be presented to City Council in 2010. The approved land uses will be implemented in amendments to the City’s Official Plan and Zoning Bylaws.
The Public Meetings will be similar, and members of the public may attend one or both:
