March 1, 2018 – Thunder Bay Fire Rescue and the City’s Infrastructure & Operations Department want to remind residents and businesses to do their part this winter and help keep fire hydrants clear and accessible.

Due to heavy snow accumulating this winter, city crews are working hard to remove snow from around fire hydrants.

“In the event of a fire, every second counts and access to fire hydrants is vital for establishing a continuous water supply during firefighting operations,” said Deputy Fire Chief Greg Hankkio.

If you have a fire hydrant located on your property, please keep it clear of snow. Do not block access or pile snow on top of a hydrant. Hydrants need to be visible and accessible to emergency responders.

Thunder Bay has more than 3,400 fire hydrants across the City.
