Marina Park Skateboard Plaza Grand Opening

June 23, 2009 – The world class Skateboard/BMX Plaza at Marina Park will be opening in grand style on Saturday, June 27 at 12 noon, unveiling the skate plaza bowl, two pieces of public art, new landscaping and a donor brick wall.

The bowl will provide new challenges for the advanced skater and upcoming competitions. The public art captures Thunder Bay’s history and connection to the waterfront.

Since the initial opening in September 2008, the 25,000-square-foot plaza has seen several additions to complete the project.  The plaza has the potential to become a destination spot for skateboarding enthusiasts across the country.

“The addition of this ‘top of the line’ skate plaza incorporating public art to our waterfront has breathed new life into Marina Park,” said Councillor Mark Bentz, Chair of the Waterfront Development Committee.

“I am very pleased to see how much enjoyment the creation of this plaza has brought to citizens of all ages and how it is helping to make our waterfront the gathering place we desire.”

Along with a tribute to the artists, brick donors, sponsors and supporters of the skate plaza, the Superior Youth Fest will host bands including local headliner Webster Death and national headliner Dead Celebrity Status.  Professional skateboarders from Vancouver and Winnipeg will also be featured doing on site demonstrations.

“Saturday’s Celebration will be an event to remember for the skateboarding community and the general public,” said Myles Cizmar, Supervisor, Recreation and Culture.

Everyone is welcome to attend this free event, and all skateboarders are encouraged to join in the celebrations and catch some air.
