November 1, 2017 – The City of Thunder Bay’s Planning Services Division unveiled the new Official Plan at Committee of the Whole on Oct. 16, and will be hosting a series of public engagement sessions to give residents a chance to review the Plan and share their views.

This Official Plan is the municipality's principal land use policy document. It describes the kind of community that residents wish to evolve into with goals, objectives and policies that function as a guide for land use planning decisions within the City of Thunder Bay.

“This Official Plan provides direction on how to implement the Provincial Policy Statement, advance Council’s strategic goals, and adapt to the changing needs of the community,” said Leslie McEachern, Director of Planning Services. “It seeks to guide the City to become environmentally sustainable, healthy, safe, livable, vibrant, connected, strong, prosperous, and resilient to the impacts of climate change.”

The Plan has been developed using three overarching approaches, including environmental sustainability, climate adaptation and a healthy and safe community. Decisions and actions taken by City Council and Administration will be guided by these approaches.

Comments and feedback received on the draft will be considered prior to the preparation of a final Plan that will be presented to City Council for adoption in January 2018.

The public engagement sessions in November include:

  • Nov. 6 – Fort William First Nation Community Centre, 400 Anemki Dr., 6-8 pm (Staff and information will also be available for the Transportation Master Plan and the Thunder Bay Transit Master Plan at this session)
  • Nov. 7 – City Hall Foyer, 500 Donald St. E, 10 am – 12 noon
  • Nov. 8 – Italian Cultural Centre, 132 Algoma St S, Galileo Hall, 4-7 pm
  • Nov. 9 – City Hall Foyer, 500 Donald St. E, 12 noon to 2 pm
