June 18, 2009 – Thunder Bay Transit acted quickly to remove an operator from a bus route on Wednesday afternoon and an investigation is underway following a charge of impaired operation of a motor vehicle.
“Our first and paramount concern is the safety of the public,” said Darrell Matson, General Manager – Transportation & Works.
City Transit administration worked quickly to remove the operator from a bus route on Winnipeg Avenue following a complaint. Police were immediately notified and a second complaint was received. The driver was asked to pull over and replaced by another driver who completed the route.
“Our Transit operators are professional drivers,” said Mr. Matson. “Every week day, our drivers transport 7,000 passengers, provide 290 service hours and there are 65 employee changeovers. We rely on our drivers to follow the expected standards and procedures – and, overwhelmingly, they do. We also need the practices and protocols to respond quickly when there is a problem – and we do, as this incident demonstrates.”
The operator will be off duty during the investigation.
An investigation into an incident in February is wrapping up including a review of internal procedures including an effective protocol for police notification. That matter remains before the Courts.
