Tests of the Landfill Gas Collection Flare System Begin Today

February 25, 2010 – The City of Thunder Bay’s Landfill Gas Collection System is nearing completion at the Thunder Bay Solid Waste and Recycling Facility on Mapleward Road. The gas collected will be burned in a flare system which has a large and noticeable flame. Residents are advised that the flare may be operating continuously while the system is set up and there is no cause for alarm if the flame is visible while driving by the landfill site.

Once complete, the system will be burning the methane gas to generate energy and surplus heat which is strategic initiative number 14 of the City’s 2007-2010 Building on the New Foundation Strategic Plan.
