June 26, 2009 – City of Thunder Bay Recreation & Culture Division staff shared details today about Canada Day activities scheduled for the evening of Wednesday, July 1 at Marina Park. The celebrations begin at 6 pm with entertainment and activities for people of all ages. With attendance estimates of over 20,000, this event remains Thunder Bay’s largest annual single day event.
The annual Canada Day Parade begins at 6 pm at the Moose Hall (434 Fort William Road). It will move along Water Street, ending at Marina Park’s Main Festival Stage as part of the Canada Day opening ceremonies. Over 25 entries will participate.
“The Canada Day celebration has something for everyone – it’s a great family event,” says Erin Cizmar, Canada Day Coordinator. Show your Canadian pride by wearing red and white. Participate in the Amazing Race and the Passport to Canada and win some Canadian prize packages. Take a relaxing drift in the paddle boat lounge and tempt your taste buds with a variety of food vendors at the celebration.
Three stages will feature a full line up of performers from 6 pm to 11 pm. The top-notch local talent selected to be part of the Canada Day festivities is guaranteed to have toes tapping and dancers dancing.
The “Celebration Station” area will be busy with activities by the City’s Playground Staff, Arabella’s Middle Eastern Dancers and magician Ken Milenko. Bring your own drum, cowbell or spoons and beat your drum in the Open Community Drum Circle with Sean Jesseau. K9 Studios will be on site with their fabulous dog obstacle course and dog demonstrations. In the “Youth Zone” area, try the giant Jenga, paintball and a variety of games by the SportsDome! And don’t forget to put your mark on the Canada Day Mural created by local artist Clay Breiland.
Canada Day’s grand finale will be a sensational fireworks display scheduled to begin at 11 pm.
Admission to the Canada Day celebrations at Marina Park is free. No parking is allowed in Marina Park on July 1. Free parking is available at the Heart of the Harbour Parkade (18 N. Court St.). Free shuttle buses will run from 4:30 pm through 12:30 am from the Community Auditorium, Intercity Shopping Centre and the Thunder Bay 55 Plus Centre.
