2011 EarthWise® Annual Report Now Available

June 14, 2012 – At last night’s EarthWise® Open House, the 2011 EarthWise® Annual Report was released. This Report showcases a variety of initiatives that are helping to shape a more sustainable community.

“The EarthWise Community Environmental Action Plan is working to create a connected, healthy, vibrant and strong community,” said Mayor Keith Hobbs. “During public consultations for the City’s Strategic Plan, we saw strong support for many of the same objectives that the EarthWise® Advisory Committee and Working Group volunteers have been implementing in our community.”

The Annual Report highlights projects and progress areas from 2011, including:

  • a number of energy efficiency upgrades to City facilities
  • the “Go Green Expo”
  • the installation of a rain garden at the Bare Point Water Treatment Plant
  • new bike lanes
  • a 52% increase in the use of bike racks on buses
  • the creation of a committee to look at walkability within the City

The past year also saw the integration of EarthWise® principles into the development of new municipal policy such as the draft Urban Forest Master Plan, the draft Urban Design Guidelines, and the City’s 2011–2014 Strategic Plan.

Additionally, EarthWise® Thunder Bay recruited four local families as “Climate Idols”. These
families participated in quarterly challenges in the areas of Energy, Transportation, Food and
Lifestyle. The project was sparked through the Sister Cities program, with participation by three countries.

“I am proud of what we have achieved and our continued progress in moving forward with this plan,” said Councillor Andrew Foulds, Chair of the EarthWise Advisory Committee. “Recent events highlight the importance of looking at all our systems with an ecological lens. In 2013 we will be conducting a five-year review of the plan and I encourage all citizens of Thunder Bay to get involved.”

Many thanks go out to City Council, Administration, and all of the EarthWise® volunteers and partners for their work and dedication over this past year. The EarthWise® Annual Report was presented to City Council on June 4, and is now available to the public at or at the Public Libraries.
