Baggage Building Arts Centre Set to Open for Summer

May 29, 2012 – Last night City Council approved entering an agreement with local art business owners, Lorraine Cull and Angela Jensen, for interim programming and operation of the new Baggage Building Arts Centre at Prince Arthur’s Landing.

The Baggage Building Arts Centre is located in the renovated and expanded historic freight shed at the centre of Prince Arthur’s Landing.  Public consultations for the waterfront development shaped the vision for the Centre as a place of cultural exchange and collaboration with its main focus being mutli-disciplinary community arts programming.

It will house a variety of both registered and drop-in activities such as workshops, demonstrations and performances that will add value to the broader park and its programs.  Particular focus will be put on programs for youth as suggested in the Inspire Thunder Bay Culture Plan.  There will also be opportunities for sale and display of local works of art and artisan products.

Cull and Jensen, who own the Painted Turtle Art Shop, were the only group to submit a proposal to operate the Centre.  Many other cultural organizations and individual artists supported their proposal and are keen to be part of this new facility.  Cull and Jensen have been heavily involved in the arts community for many years, and clearly understand the City’s vision for the Centre and its role within Prince Arthur’s Landing and the broader community.  They will be operating the Baggage Building Arts Centre on a non-profit basis, and as a separate entity from their existing business.

The anticipated opening date for the Baggage Building Arts Centre is Friday, June 15.  Operating hours through the summer will include weekdays, weekends and holidays.
