Bells Ring for Peace

July 9, 2008 – The City of Thunder Bay and sister city, Gifu City, Japan, jointly rang a 'Peace Bell' in the respective cities today for the second straight year to recognize the importance of world peace and commemorate the anniversary of the exchange relationship.

"Thunder Bay is proud to join our Sister City, Gifu City, Japan, in ringing the Bell to promote a world of prosperous existence for all people," said Mayor Lynn Peterson.

Although culturally very different, Thunder Bay and Gifu City share many of the same challenges and have agreed to cooperate with each other on the universal subjects of peace, human rights and the environment.

"Citizens will be ringing Gifu City's Peace Bell with the purpose of further deepening their support of peace," said Shigemitsu Hosoe, Mayor – Gifu City. "I hope that the sounds of the Peace Bell will ring in through the hearts of people throughout the world."
