Celebrating 13 Years of Support for the United Way: Employees to Soar to the Million in 2008

October 2, 2008 – Employees from the City of Thunder Bay and Superior North EMS (SNEMS) proudly kicked off their 2008 United Way Employee Campaign today at the 13th Annual Kick-Off Luncheon for the United Way.

The event, sponsored by TBayTel, was held from 11 am to 1:30 pm at the CLE Heritage Building on May Street and provided employees with an opportunity to gather for lunch in support of the United Way. Meals were served by celebrity City and SNEMS servers, which included several General Managers, Managers and City Councillors.

Although a final head count wasn't available, more than 500 employees attend this event each year. "This is a milestone year for the Municipal Division as we try to soar to the million dollar mark in funds raised for the United Way," said City Treasurer and General Manager – Finance, Co-Chair of the Municipal Division United Way Campaign. "It is fantastic to see employees from across the City come together each year to support the United Way and help launch our annual campaign. We sincerely thank our fellow employees for demonstrating compassion through their ongoing support for the United Way."

Last year the City of Thunder Bay and SNEMS pledged $132,794 to the United Way through the employee campaign. "It is our hope that this year we will see even more employees participating and that those who already participate increase their contributions to bring us well above the million dollar mark," said Busch.

The City of Thunder Bay and SNEMS United Way employee campaign is organized by more than 150 volunteers with support from many others. Employees contribute through payroll deduction, Dress Down/Different days, and special events including the Kick-Off Luncheon, a Spaghetti Dinner & Auction and the Mayor's Mulligan Golf Tournament.
