Christmas Tree Collection Sites Open Boxing Day

December 21, 2012 – The City of Thunder Bay is reminding residents that once the holidays are over, natural Christmas trees can be recycled at various tree chipping drop-off locations throughout the city.

Trees are transported to the Solid Waste & Recycling Facility where they are ground into chips. The chips are combined with compost made from organic material collected at the site all year, as well as material from the spring and fall leaf and yard waste pick-ups. The final compost product is available for residents in the spring for lawns and flower gardens.

North drop-off locations:

  • Brent Park (Balsam St. at Margaret St.)
  • County Park Tennis Courts (County Boulevard)
  • Grandview Arena (Madeline St. in between Grandview Arena & Westminster United Church – not in the arena parking lot)
  • John Jumbo Recreation Centre (Toivo St.)
  • Strathcona Golf Course

South drop-off locations:

  • Delaney Arena (Legion Track Drive)
  • Kinsmen Northwood Centre (609 N James St.)
  • Lakehead Labour Centre (Fort William Rd.)
  • Westfort Playing Field (Off Neebing Ave.)
  • West Thunder Community Centre (915 S Edward St.)

All ornaments, tinsel and plastic bags must be removed from the tree before bringing it to a drop-off location. Trees cannot be left at recycling depots or put out at the curb for collection with the garbage.

Drop-off sites are open from Dec. 26 to Jan. 10. There is no charge for tree chipping.
