December 15, 2008 – The City of Thunder Bay is proud to announce that the Corporate Communications & Strategic Initiatives Division is the recipient of three 2008 MarCom Awards. The Division, along with design partners, received the awards for the following projects:

  • Platinum Award – Prince Arthur’s Landing at Marina Park Experience Display. Design partner was Generator Strategy Advertising and construction by Northwest Fencing.
  • Gold Award – Pro bono work creating the Leadership Thunder Bay 5-Year Report to the Community. Design partner was Korkola Design.
  • Honourable Mention – Your City Newsletter to Citizens October/November 2007 Edition. Design by City of Thunder Bay Printing & Graphics.

MarCom Awards is an international competition for marketing and communication professionals involved in the concept, writing and design of marketing and communication programs and print, visual and audio materials. Entries come from corporate marketing and communication departments, advertising agencies, PR firms, design shops, production companies and freelancers.

“The City of Thunder Bay is committed to communications excellence and is working hard to continuously improve our communications with residents,” said Councillor Linda Rydholm, Chair of the Community Communications Committee, which also includes Councillors Iain Angus, Aldo Ruberto and Robert Tuchenhagen. “This recognition of our efforts is appreciated.”

MarCom Awards is administered and judged by the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals. The international organization consists of several thousand marketing, communication, advertising, public relations, media production and free-lance professionals. The Association, based in Arlington, Texas, oversees awards and recognition programs, provides judges and sets standards for excellence.

Judges are industry professionals who look for companies and individuals whose talent exceeds a high standard of excellence and whose work serves as a benchmark for the industry. There were over 5,000 entries from throughout the United States and several countries around the world in the MarCom Awards 2008 competition. About 18 per cent of entries received the Platinum Award, the top honour, which is presented to those judged to be among the most outstanding in terms of quality, creative and resourcefulness.

The competition has grown to perhaps the largest of its kind in the world. A look at the winners shows a range in size from individual communicators to media conglomerates and Fortune 500 companies. The competition is so well thought of in the industry that national public relations organizations, local ad clubs, and local business communicator chapters are entrants.
