City Hosts Mayors for Meals Day March 24

March 17, 2011 – City of Thunder Bay Meals on Wheels proudly announced today that Mayor Keith Hobbs will be participating in Mayors for Meals Day on March 24, to show his support for our community’s seniors and people with disabilities.

Mayors for Meals Day 2011 will feature Mayor Hobbs joining a pair of volunteers to deliver Meals on Wheels from Grandview Lodge.

“I am honoured to participate in this important event,” said Mayor Hobbs. “This is a great opportunity to connect with more of our community members and see the positive impact that Meals on Wheels has in our community.”

“I think it’s great that Mayor Hobbs is taking part”, said Heather Mihichuk, Meals on Wheels Supervisor. “His participation will help raise awareness of the value this service provides to our community. We also aim to attract more volunteers to come forward to drive or serve for Meals on Wheels - we are always recruiting and it’s a fun position!”

Mayors for Meals Day is an annual campaign that originated in the U.S. in 2006 as a component of March for Meals. Over 1,000 Meals on Wheels agencies continent-wide participate, involving local mayors in promoting Meals on Wheels in their communities, helping seniors and people with disabilities maintain their health and independence through nutrition and social contact with neighbourly volunteers.

Last year in Ontario, 48 mayors took part in Mayors for Meals, including City of Thunder Bay for the first time.
