City Thanked for Welcoming Sandy Lake Forest Fire Evacuees

July 31, 2012 – At a morning meeting of the City’s Emergency Operations Control Group, Sandy Lake First Nation Band Councillor Joe Kakegamic thanked the City on behalf of Chief Bart Meekis for welcoming his people to the City following evacuations due to Forest Fires in the Northwest region.

Thunder Bay has agreed to welcome an additional 250 Sandy Lake First Nation evacuees who are expected to arrive over the course of the day.  To date, the Red Cross has registered 234 evacuees and the expected total number of visitors arriving in the City is anticipated to be approximately 550 people.

At this time, the Sandy Lake First Nation evacuation is not anticipated to be expanded and the City is presently operating at capacity.  In cooperation with Emergency Management Ontario and its partner agencies, the City’s Emergency Control Group continues to monitor the situation.
