City of Thunder Bay Appoints New General Manager

July 19, 2011 – The City of Thunder Bay is pleased to announce the appointment of Michael Smith as General Manager of the Facilities & Fleet Department. Mr. Smith will assume a lead role for major corporate construction projects as well as the operation of corporate facilities, fleet services, construction and renovation services and transit operations.

Mr. Smith’s 10-year-career with the City of Waterloo has provided him with extensive experience in management of major projects, advanced construction practices, energy management, green initiatives and work management systems.

He was Director of Asset Management, and has previously held the position of Director of Facilities Services and Manager of the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex. Mr. Smith holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Leisure and Recreation Studies and is a Certified Municipal Manager.

“We are pleased to have Mr. Smith join the Corporation,” said City Manager Tim Commisso. “We are very impressed with his breadth of experience and he will be an asset to our senior leadership team.”

Mr. Smith will report to the City Manager and will be starting his new position effective Tuesday, Sept. 6.
