City’s Emergency Plan Tested Today

October 21, 2009 – The Thunder Bay Emergency Operations Control Group held an exercise at North Central Fire Station today to test its Emergency Plan with special emphasis on pandemic planning. The “tabletop” exercise involved three scenarios during a simulated influenza pandemic including the declaration of a mock emergency by the Mayor under the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act.

The Emergency Operations Control Group holds an annual exercise – either on paper, known as a “table-top”, or simulated in the field – to test its emergency preparedness.

“We have an excellent Emergency Plan that is up to date and tested regularly,” said Mayor Lynn Peterson. “These exercises keep us ready to manage a coordinated emergency response.”

The City of Thunder Bay has participated in pandemic planning with the Thunder Bay District Health Unit. The Health Unit was an active participant in today’s exercise.

The Municipal Emergency Operations Control Group is a group of 14 municipal and utility officials including the Mayor, City Manager and Community Emergency Management Coordinator. The Group brings together diversified areas of expertise to provide a coordinated emergency response and make best use of all available resources.
