City’s Strategic Plan Builds on the New Foundation

January 23, 2008 - City Council adopted the 2007-2010 Strategic Plan: Building on the New Foundation at a special Committee of the Whole meeting tonight.

This is a blueprint that will help us build on the success of Thunder Bay's New Foundation, said Mayor Lynn Peterson.  We will keep the momentum going to accomplish our strategic priorities and build a solid future for the City. Over the next three years, we will be undertaking 87 initiatives so that Thunder Bay will: have a stronger and more diversified economy; be cleaner, greener, more beautiful and proud; have a high quality of life; and be one of the best-run cities.

The 2007-2010 Strategic Plan: Building on the New Foundation was developed by Council with Administration through a series of strategic planning sessions. The Plan outlines Council's priorities and the actions needed to take concrete steps toward their goals. Building on the New Foundation provides clear direction to Administration regarding Council's priorities which must be considered when assessing the delivery of municipal services, said Robert Petrie, Chief Administrative Officer.

Building on the New Foundation begins with our Community's Vision and Strengths followed by an introduction from the Mayor and CAO and continues to outline Council's Mission, Goals & Principles. The Mission is: The City of Thunder Bay provides a balance of services that improves our quality of life and supports our economy in a responsible manner. The Principles include: economic growth & diversification, fiscal responsibility, cost effectiveness, partnerships, innovation, work with the private sector, informed and involved citizens, safe neighbourhoods, cultural diversity, environmental stewardship, sustainability and accountability. The goals concern Economic Development, Quality of Life, and Essential Services.

The Plan is not intended to be a static document, but rather a living document subject to change. The Plan will be reviewed and updated annually, said Mayor Peterson. This plan is based on input from the public through the 2007 citizen survey. We have listened. Now we will act. We will work with our community partners to pursue the initiatives and actions in this plan.

A summary of Building on the New Foundation will be featured in the February edition of Your City the City's Bi-Monthly Report to Citizens, which will be distributed with The Chronicle-Journal on Feb. 9 and to non-subscribers Feb. 10. The Plan will also be posted on the City's Website at www.thunderbay.ca and available in hard copy at City Hall and at branches of the Thunder Bay Public Library.
