Community Holds Jane’s Walk Neighbourhood Tours to Connect

May 3, 2013 – Residents across Thunder Bay will take to the streets to mark the City’s third annual participation in Jane’s Walk. An international event to encourage connected communities and celebrate walkable neighbourhoods.

Jane’s Walk celebrates the work of urban activist Jane Jacobs, who promoted the simple yet revolutionary idea that accessible, mixed use neighbourhoods are key to the health, safety and survival of a city. Jane’s Walks cultivate a broad understanding of how cities organically develop and thrive. It works to advance walkable neighbourhoods.

Local volunteers have put together six free neighbourhood walking tours that inspire citizens to get to know their city, and each other, by getting out and walking. Local participants will join walkers in more than 30 cities across Canada and more than 70 cities worldwide in celebration of Jane Jacobs’s birthday on May 4.

“Jane Jacobs pioneered understandings of the fundamental building blocks of safe and inclusive neighbourhoods,” said Dr. Amy Siciliano, Jane’s Walk Facilitator and Crime Prevention Coordinator – City of Thunder Bay. “She propelled the notion that the safest urban neighbourhoods are those with an active, diverse street life. Her community-based approach to putting people first in planning makes Jane’s Walk a natural fit for the goals of our Crime Prevention Council.”
