Complex Hosts 2013 National Lifeguard Championships

Event date: Friday, May 03, 2013, from 10:54 AM to 10:54 AM

May 2, 2013 – The Canada Games Complex will be hosting the 2013 National Lifeguard Emergency Response Championships May 4 – 5. Athletes from 20 teams across the country will be participating in this exciting event that highlights water rescue and first-aid skills. Thunder Bay has four local teams competing.

“Having the National Lifeguard Emergency Response Championship hosted at the Canada Games Complex is a win/win situation for Lifeguards and the Community,” said Donna Sippala, Supervisor - Aquatics & Wellness. “Our Lifeguards are able to hone their skills and become the best professionals that they can be. The community wins because these professionals use these skills to prevent and respond safely and confidently in any emergency situation.”

The competition consists of three events including Water Rescue, Priority Assessment and First Aid. Opening Ceremonies will be held on May 4 at 11:30 am.

“It is my pleasure to welcome lifeguards from across Canada to the National Lifeguard competition here in Thunder Bay,” said Councillor Andrew Foulds, a former lifeguard and competitor. “As a teenager and as young adult, lifeguarding had a huge impact on my life.  It helped me develop lifelong skills that allowed me to become the person I am today.”

The event is open to spectators at no cost.  The Open Swims on both days are Twoonie Swims; all admissions are $2.
