DRC Wraps-Up Fundraising Campaign, Focus Turns to Claims

January 31, 2013 – The Disaster Relief Committee (DRC) concluded fundraising for the Thunder Bay & Area Disaster Relief Fund today after over seven months of donations.

"The generosity of this community is overwhelming," said Wayne Fletcher, Chair of the DRC. "It never ceases to amaze me how the organizations and citizens of Thunder Bay constantly stepped up and helped their neighbours in their time of need."

The DRC, formed on June 15, 2012 set its first goal to raise funds for those affected by the May 28 flood emergency that had no insurance or limited insurance. Their second goal is to receive, review and process claims from those affected.

Following the Oct. 31 deadline to submit an application for losses and damages, the Disaster Relief Committee (DRC) is now focusing on reviewing the 600 claims that were submitted

“Our goal is to try to have all the paperwork done by the end of February so we can start paying out to those affected in March,” Fletcher said.

Two generous donations were also presented to members of the DRC today.
St Patrick High School presented a cheque for $10,000, raised by the Grade 12 drama class' performance of two sold out performances of ‘Tis' the Season Charlie Brown’.
Dan Topatigh, Interim President & CEO of Tbaytel also presented a cheque for $32,208.09. The funds were raised by Tbaytel customers donating $25 from the sale of cable boxes, as well as collecting donations that were matched by Tbaytel.
Yesterday's Dougall Media Radio marathon also contributed $13, 373.11 to the fund after a full-day Radio Marathon at Intercity Mall. Every dollar raised, the Province of Ontario will match by two - $1 becomes $3. A final total will be available early next week.

“On behalf of the DRC, I want to thank all of the homeowners who were affected by this unfortunate event for your strength and resilience during this trying time, as well as those who generously contributed to the fund to help your neighbours,” added Fletcher.
