Disaster Relief Committee Encourages Community Fundraising

July 12, 2012 – The Disaster Relief Committee (DRC) wishes to thank all of those individuals, community groups and organizations that are hosting fundraising events on behalf of the Disaster Relief Fund.  The DRC is also inviting residents to register their event with the DRC online to receive materials and assistance.

“The flooding on May 28 affected thousands of homes and businesses across the City who are still recovering,” said Wayne Fletcher, Chair of the Disaster Relief Committee. “We want to encourage the entire community to help in any way that they can and assist in the fundraising efforts.”

The committee’s first goal is to raise funds for disaster relief that will be matched by the Province of Ontario through the Disaster Relief Fund. The second goal is to receive, review and process claims from those affected by the flood who have no insurance or limited insurance.

The DRC will be tracking all fundraising initiatives and events and will be highlighting the activity online and through appreciation events.

Donations to the Thunder Bay & Area Disaster Relief Fund can be made at the Thunder Bay 55 Plus Centre on River Street, the Canada Games Complex, Volunteer Pool, Churchill Pool and the Victoriaville Civic Centre Cashiers. The United Way of Thunder Bay, The Salvation Army and the Red Cross are also accepting donations for the Thunder Bay & Area Disaster Relief Fund.
