Flood Repair Work May Require Building Permit


July 13, 2012 – The City’s Building Division reminds property owners that a building permit is required for most renovation and repair work.

Replacing finishing (wallboard, flooring or trim), reinstalling existing plumbing fixtures, or minor maintenance (patching) should not require a building permit.

A building permit is required for more substantial work, such as:

  • Replacing or adding to structural elements (foundation pads, footings, columns or beams)
  • Adding or removing and replacing large areas of drywall, vapour barrier, insulation and interior partitioning
  • Replacing plumbing drain, waste and vent system, and water service piping
  • Installing a backwater valve in a building drain

By obtaining building permits and inspections, property owners can make sure they are doing work properly. 

“All permit applications are being fast tracked by the Division,” said Mark Smith, General Manager –
Development Services Department. “Permit fees for uninsured and underinsured homeowners may be considered an eligible expense through the Disaster Relief Assistance Program.”
