Gift Wrappings Will Be Left Behind

December 23, 2008 – Every year after the holidays, many residents put discarded gift wrap at the curb or in the depots to be recycled but unfortunately, brightly coloured paper and foil gift wrappings can not be recycled due to the extremely high ink content of the paper.

“Recool Canada, who picks up the recyclables at the curb and at the depots, will not collect recycling bags that contain wrapping paper,” says Brad Adams, Acting Manager, Roads Division. Do not drop off wrapping paper at the recycling depots or put it out with your recycling at the curb. Wrappings must be put out with your regular garbage.”

Residents can help reduce the volume of wasted paper by taking new and creative approaches to wrapping gifts.  Buy or make fabric gift bags that can be re-used year after year.  Put gifts in reusable gift bags or other containers like decorated baskets, tins or jars that can be used again. Old maps and newspaper comics also make great wrapping paper.  Pack away the wrappings you do receive to use next year.

Check your garbage collection calendar for a complete listing of items that can be recycled at the curb.
