Girl Power 10 Conference – Be Strong. Be You.

Event date: Thursday, April 25, 2013, from 9:49 AM to 9:49 AM

April 25, 2013 – Be Strong, Be You is the message Girl Power will deliver to girls in grades five through nine at the 10th Annual event on Saturday, May 11.

The Girl Power Conference is a place where girls grade five through nine can participate in recreation opportunities, learn about being healthy and boost their self-esteem in a safe and supportive environment. This event continues to grow in popularity; meeting the needs of girls wishing to experience fitness and wellness activities in a fun, supportive environment. Over 150 girls are projected to participate this year.

“Female-only programs have proven to be very successful in providing the motivation girls need to get involved and stay involved in healthy lifestyle activities,” said Maryann Kleynendorst, Supervisor – Community Programs (Children & Youth). “It is the event of the year for young women and provides them with a safe space to get active, learn new skills, meet new friends and have fun doing so!”

The conference, now in its tenth year, was originally launched to improve physical activity, leadership development and personal growth among girls. It offers a variety of activities and workshops for young women to try and has expanded each year to offer more exciting activities and unique opportunities for girls. As part of the Healthy Communities Fund, Girl Power is supported by the Province of Ontario and the Ministry of Culture, Tourism & Sport.

This year includes past favourites like zumba and tennis, as well as new activities including slack lining and karate.  Also new this year is a video contest where girls can submit a one- or two-minute video (prior to the conference) showing why they think girls are great or why they are proud to be a girl!! The ever popular ‘Cool Girl’ contest will also be offered. Girls will use their creative talents to write a song, short story or poem, paint a picture or take a photograph, the possibilities are endless! Winners will be chosen by their peers at the conference and will receive a cash prize!
