Girl Power 5 Conference Kicks - Off Youth Week

April 17, 2008 - Girls, mark your calendars for the 5th Annual Girl Power Conference taking place Saturday, May 3. The conference, for girls in grades five through nine, features an energizing, action-packed day that focuses on helping young women find their passions and follow their dreams through interactive workshops and motivational speakers. Girls will learn about healthy lifestyles and active living through fitness, sports, and personal growth sessions.

Last year, 130 girls participated in the conference. I think this a good program because it helps to boost self esteem, said one past participant. I will definitely come back next year and now I know that I can make a difference wherever I go Thank you Girl Power!

One of the keynote speakers will be Rena Bode, a cross country skier who has competed in national and provincial competitions and is a Lakehead University scholar.

This year a `Cool Girl Award' chosen by the conference participants will be presented. Participating girls will submit their artwork, story, picture, or poem displaying what makes girls great.  The first place winner will receive $75, second place $50, and third place $25.

Girl Power 5 takes place from 9 am - 5 pm at Confederation College, kicking off Youth Week in the City. The registration fee is $25. Call 625-TIME to register or drop by the Community Services Department in the Victoriaville Civic Centre or the Canada Games Complex. The deadline to register is April 25.

The conference is hosted by the City of Thunder Bay Recreation & Culture Division, Boys and Girls Club, Take Heart Coalition, and Confederation College.
