Girl Power Conference Challenges Girls to Be Their Best

April 14, 2009 – The 6th Annual Girl Power Conference, hosted by The City of Thunder Bay Recreation & Culture Division along with several youth serving agencies, will take place Saturday, April 25, 9 am to 4 pm at Confederation College.  The event is for girls in grades five through nine and offers an action-packed day full of interactive workshops and motivational speakers. Girls are introduced to healthy lifestyles and active living through participation in fitness, sports, and personal growth sessions.

“The conference plays an important role in motivating young women to empower themselves and learn healthy active lifestyles,” says Myles Cizmar, Supervisor Recreation & Culture. “The popularity of the event has grown each year and offers exciting new workshops and inspirational role models who make fitness fun.”

Local Gold Medal-winning Olympic athlete Katie Weatherston will be the featured keynote speaker. Katie played a key role on at the 2006 Olympics for Women’s Hockey and has also won Gold Medals at three Four Nations Cup Tournaments in 2004, 2005, and 2007.

“I like the Girl Power Conference because you get to try different activities all in one day!” says Debra Tapsay, attendee of last year’s event. “Girls should come because you make new friends and it’s an experience you will never forget.”

This year a “Cool Girl Award” will be chosen by girls at the conference. This award is a chance for participants to say what makes girls great. Participating girls will have a chance to submit art work, photographs, movies, collages or poems. The first place winner will receive $75, second place $50 and third place $25.

The conference is a pre-curser event for Youth Week in the City. Registration for the conference is $25 or $35 with a T-shirt. To sign-up, call 625-2351 or drop by the Community Services Department in the Victoriaville Civic Centre or the Canada Games Complex. The deadline for registration is Saturday, April 18.

Girl Power is sponsored by The City of Thunder Bay Recreation & Culture Division, Boys & Girls Clubs of Thunder Bay, Take Heart Coalition and Confederation College.
