Local Firefighters Return from G8 Summit

June 30, 2010 – Local Thunder Bay firefighters have returned from the G8 Summit in Huntsville where they provided firefighting assistance during an eight-day deployment. Thunder Bay Fire Rescue was part of the planning for almost one year, with 20 firefighters and two command officers invited to help provide 24-hour coverage.

“This was a great opportunity for Thunder Bay Fire Rescue to participate in the G8 and have the experience of providing fire protection there, as well as working with other agencies,” said Chief John Hay.

“The group we sent provided general fire protection services, extrication services, and fire suppression services within a designated area.”

Through the Ontario Fire Marshals Office, Fire Rescue was also part of the Integrated Security Unit tasked with Chemical Biological Radiological Nuclear response within the secure zones in Huntsville.

The G8 is an informal group of eight of the world's leading economic powers: Canada, France, United States, United Kingdom, Russia, Germany, Japan, and Italy. The annual summit is a chance for the leaders of the G8 countries to meet face-to-face and develop common approaches to urgent challenges facing the world.
