Long Service Personnel and New Graduates Honoured

November 7, 2011 – The Thunder Bay Fire Rescue Service honoured both new and seasoned fire fighters at a Long Service and New Recruit Graduation Ceremony held Saturday at the Thunder Bay & Region Protective and Emergency Services Training Complex.

"Along with the Provincial and Federal Governments, Thunder Bay Fire Rescue takes great pride in being able to recognize the long, faithful service of our honourees today,” said Fire Chief John Hay who led the ceremony at the Thunder Bay & Region Training Complex with participation by MP Bruce Hyer and Mayor Keith Hobbs. “The fire fighters receiving medals and pins today represent over 250 years of experience, dedication and service to the citizens of Thunder Bay."

20 members of the Thunder Bay Fire Rescue Service received Long Service Awards including:

  • Martin Hynna, 10 year pin
  • Robert Jesperson, 10 year pin
  • Darren Leishman, 10 year pin
  • Murray MacLeod, 10 year pin
  • Don Paglaro, 10 year pin
  • Anthony Stokaluk, 10 year pin
  • Bruce Bode, 20 year pin
  • Phillip Dzuba, 20 year pin and 20 year Exemplary Service Medal
  • John Kaplanis, 20 year pin
  • Mike Missere, 20 year pin and 20 year Exemplary Service Medal
  • Lorne Molinski, 20 year pin
  • Darrin Sheehan, 20 year pin
  • John Boorman, 30 year pin
  • David Grant, 30 year pin
  • Alan Gray, 30 year pin
  • Joseph Grzelewski, 30 year pin
  • Dave Long, 30 year pin
  • David March, 30 year pin
  • David Nelson, 30 year pin
  • Les Newman, 30 year pin

“Thunder Bay Fire Rescue is also proud to welcome seven new 4th Class Firefighters," said Fire Chief Hay. "It's important to recognize the hard work and dedication these individuals have put in to reach this point. We thank each new fire fighter and their families for their commitment to the Fire Service and the citizens of Thunder Bay.”

The new recruits, who completed a rigorous ten week training program with the guidance of Tim Langille and Bill Johnson, bring the Fire & Rescue Service to 210 personnel.
