More Opportunities for Public Comment on Waterfront Public Art

March 22, 2011 – The City of Thunder Bay is seeking public comment on three proposals to create artwork for the Red River Road Installation at Prince Arthur’s Landing until April 3. Given the large scale, prominent location, and value of the park to the community, the public has been invited to comment on the short listed artworks.

The budget for the Red River Road Installation is $90,000.

“The Committee is very pleased with the response to these competitions,” said Reana Mussato, Public Art Coordinator. “High quality submissions were received from artists across Canada, and these pieces will be an investment in our community.”

Each waterfront art competition has a specific theme, and in combination, the public art will tell the cultural story and reflect the unique character of the shoreline of Lake Superior and the Thunder Bay region. The successful artists will be determined by public art juries that have been appointed for the competitions, but the public is being encouraged to comment.

The City will also be seeking public input on the short listed artworks for the Water Garden Island Feature beginning on March 29 at the Thunder Bay Art Gallery and on the City’s website.
The finalists’ proposals can be viewed at the Thunder Bay Art Gallery during regular hours (12-8 pm Tuesday to Thursday, 12-5 pm Friday to Sunday) and online at Comments received will be reviewed by the juries as they make their final selections.
