New Bike Lanes Being Painted This Week

August 15, 2013 – This week, new lane markings and signs for dedicated bike lanes are being painted on Adelaide, Arundel, High, Keith and Theresa Streets, along with Leslie Avenue.

A new bike lane on Beverly Street, from Winnipeg Avenue to Balmoral Street, will be painted when the road construction has been completed on this portion of roadway.

City Council approved of the implementation of these new bike lanes after the success of existing bike lanes.  Thunder Bay’s bike lanes have been a tremendous success with a 70% decrease in cyclist collisions, a 22% decrease in motorist collisions, and an average of 183% increase in cyclist volumes on new bike lanes.

With the implementation of these new bike lanes, the Current River portion of the City of Thunder Bay Active Transportation Plan will be complete. As well, a significant portion of a north-south cycling corridor will be established: beginning at Arundel Street and ending at High and Bay Streets.

For more information on how to use dedicated bike lanes or to see the Active Transportation Plan, visit www.cycletbay.ca.
