OTF Grant Makes Recreation-Able Forum’s Vision Reality

June 23, 2009 – Today, organizers of the Recreation-Able, Inclusive Recreation Forum announced receiving a $40,000 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF).  Funding for the Forum will help recreation and leisure providers from all across Ontario learn what it takes to develop or improve recreation programs and services for persons with disabilities.  Local MPP Bill Mauro and Donna Gilhooly, Vice-Chair of OTF’s Board of Directors made the official announcement at a media gathering at the Sports Dome.

“This grant is an investment towards enriching the lives of persons with disabilities through meaningful, recreation opportunities,” said Bill Mauro, MPP for Thunder Bay-Atikokan.  “I’m delighted to see that there is a venue in place where recreation providers from all across Ontario can come together and learn from each other in providing activities that are accessible and inclusive for everyone to enjoy.”

Community Living Thunder Bay, the Leisure Resources Thunder Bay Committee and the City of Thunder Bay’s Recreation and Culture Division are proud to host the Recreation-Able, Inclusive Recreation Forum this fall.  From September 30th to October 2nd, those interested in learning about inclusive recreation and applying the Accessibility for Ontarians with a Disability Act will gather at the Valhalla Inn in Thunder Bay to receive the education and resources needed to make recreational activities more accessible and inclusive for persons with disabilities across Ontario.

“The grant will provide participants with the latest ways to enhance current programs and to utilize staff and resources when making their activities more inclusive and accessible,” said Forum Coordinator Barbara DeZan “We are thankful for the support of the Ontario Trillium Foundation for their commitment to supporting a local initiative so persons with disabilities can have equal opportunity to receive the health benefits associated from living an active lifestyle.”

The Recreation-Able Forum is a one-stop training experience, established by as part of a joint effort of more than eleven local community groups and organizations who along with support from the City of Thunder Bay’s Recreation & Culture Division, have contributed their expertise and human resources to the project
