Operation Porch Light – Feb. 18: Remember Canadian Forces Overseas on Family Day

February 13, 2008 - City Council is encouraging residents to show support for our soldiers overseas by turning on their porch lights from 7 pm through 8:30 pm on Family Day - Monday, Feb. 18.

Operation Porch Light reminds us all of the sacrifices our soldiers make that allow us to celebrate occasions such as Family Day, said Councillor Larry Hebert in a resolution to Council that was adopted Dec. 17, 2007. There are many families in our City whose members are serving in the Canadian Forces. This is a way to show our support for them, as well as our troops, on this new holiday.

Residents who plan to participate in Operation Porch Light are encouraged to use energy efficient compact fluorescent bulbs in their porch light fixtures. Copies of the resolution passed by Council were forwarded to the Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association, Association of Municipalities of Ontario and the provincial government to gain the support of all Ontarians.
