Outdoor Water Use Restrictions Take Effect

May 15, 2008 - Effective immediately, outdoor water use restrictions will be enforced for Thunder Bay residents.  Homes with an even house number are permitted to use water outdoors only on even numbered days of the month.  Homes with an odd number are allowed to use water outdoors only on odd numbered days of the month. These water restrictions, in accordance with By-law 84-1970, will be in effect until further notice.

For fire protection and for equitable sharing of water for normal household use in the spring and summer months, water conservation measures are necessary.

During extended dry weather conditions, lawn and garden water restrictions may not be sufficient and all outdoor water usage will be prohibited.  Water restrictions will be strictly enforced.  Questions regarding restrictions may be directed to the Environment Division at 624-7873.

Water customers are encouraged to schedule outdoor water use such as lawn and garden watering in the late evening or early morning.  There are many other ways to use water wisely that will help reduce demands on our water supply including the following:

  • Use a broom instead of a hose to clean patios, driveways and sidewalks.
  • Place a layer of mulch (bark chips, grass clippings) around trees and plants so the soil will hold water.
  • Once the gardening season arrives, adjust sprinklers so only the grass is watered, not the house or driveway.
  • Set automatic sprinklers to water before 7 am or after 10 pm.
  • Longer grass holds the water better.  Set your mower a little higher in hot, dry weather.
