Outdoor Water Use Restrictions Take Effect

June 15, 2009 – Effective immediately, outdoor water use restrictions will be enforced for Thunder Bay residents. Homes with an even house number are permitted to use water outdoors only on even numbered days of the month.  Homes with an odd number are allowed to use water outdoors only on odd numbered days of the month.  These water restrictions are in accordance with By-law 060-2007.

Water conservation measures are necessary for fire protection and for equitable sharing of water for normal household use in the spring and summer months.

During extended dry weather conditions, odd and even outdoor water restrictions may not be sufficient and all outdoor water usage will be prohibited. Water restrictions will be strictly enforced.  Questions regarding restrictions may be directed to the Environment Division at 624-7873.

Water customers are encouraged to schedule outdoor water use such as lawn and garden watering in the late evening or early morning.  Many other ways to use water wisely will reduce demands on our water supply.

  • Set automatic sprinklers to water before 7 am or after 10 pm
  • Adjust sprinklers so only the grass is watered, not the house or driveway
  • Longer grass holds the water better. Set your mower a little higher in hot, dry weather
  • Place a layer of mulch (bark chips, grass clippings) around trees and plants so the soil will hold water
  • Use a broom instead of a hose to clean patios, driveways and sidewalks.
