Road Work Ahead

July 15, 2010 – Road construction projects underway in Thunder Bay can result in road closures, detours and delays for drivers. Watch for signage and please drive with extra care in construction zones.

The following areas are scheduled for road and other major infrastructure work expected to affect traffic during the period from July 15 to Aug. 13, 2010. The City’s Capital Budget provides funding for these projects. Some of this year’s construction projects, including road and bridge work, are funded in part, through the Federal Gas Tax Program.

Temporary street closures will be in effect:

  • Every Wednesday from June 23 to Aug. 18 (with the exception of June 30) from 4:30 pm to 9 pm Bobby Curtola Drive from the Skate Plaza to the base of Marina Park Overpass and Saul Laskin Drive will be closed for Summer in the Parks events.
  • Friday, July 16 from 3 pm to midnight and Saturday, July 17 from 7 am to midnight West Lyon Boulevard from Algoma Street to Arundel Street will be closed for the Dragon Boat Race Festival.
  • Thursday, July 18 from 12:01 am to Monday, Aug. 2 at 12 midnight Winnipeg Avenue from Paul Shaffer Drive to Lisgar Street will be closed for the IBAF World Junior Baseball Championship.
  • Saturday, July 24 from 9 am to 12 midnight Bay Street from Secord Street to Algoma Street, Bay Street from Algoma Street to Machar Street (not to include the Algoma Street, Secord Street and Machar Street intersections) will be closed for the Finlandia Club 100 Year Anniversary.
  • Sunday, Aug. 1 and Monday, Aug.2 from 12 noon to 1 am Algoma Street from Dufferin Street to 130 metres south of Dufferin Street will be closed for Festa Italiana.
  • Wednesday, Aug. 4 from St. Paul Street from Red River Road to Van Norman Street and Cooke Street from St. Paul Street to entrance of Multicultural Centre Parking lot will be closed for Pirate’s Cove.

Road Work Ahead:

  • Rehabilitation work on the May Street Bridge over the Neebing River began in mid-April. Work will continue through the summer months. Access for all businesses and residents will be maintained but motorists can expect traffic delays.
  • Road work on Woodside Street from Whalen Street to McComber Crescent, Walsh Street from Kingsway Street to Edward Street, Inchiquin Street from Winnipeg Avenue to High Street, Balsam Street from Huron Avenue to Margaret Street, Bay Street from Secord Street to Banning Street, Harold Street from Miles Street to Victoria Avenue. Expect detours, lane closures and possible driveway access restrictions in some locations.
  • St Paul Street from Van Norman Street to Camelot Street will be closed to allow for the reconstruction of the sanitary sewer, watermain, new sidewalks and resurfacing.
  • Tupper Street from Martha Street to Pine Street will be closed to local traffic to allow for the construction of a new watermain.
  • Work on a retrofit is scheduled to begin at the Duke Street Pumping Station including pressure zone enhancement and grid improvements.
  • Watermain rehabilitation and replacement is scheduled along James Street in the northbound lane from Churchill Drive to Parkway Drive. Watermain work is also scheduled along Dublin Street from Walkover Street to Valley Street and along Bay Street from Banning Street to Secord Street.
  • Road and sewer construction is scheduled for Mountdale Avenue – Gore Street to Montreal Street. Motorists will be affected by road closures to through traffic during the construction period, local access via north or south end only.
  • Road construction on Walsh Street – Kingsway to Edward Street. Lane closures and detours will be in effect as the work proceeds.
  • Road construction on Van Norman Street from Rockwood Street to Clarkson Street.
  • Paving is scheduled for the South Neebing Community Centre Parking Lot.
  • At the Regina Avenue dead end completion work is underway of local improvement paving and curbing.
  • Machar Avenue from Bay Street to Wilson Street will be closed to local traffic to allow for the reconstruction of the sanitary sewer and existing watermain.
  • Sidewalk work is slated for on sections of Isabella Street, Miles Street, Rankin Street, Franklin Street, James Street, McPherson Street, Stephens Street, Pine Street, Donald Street and High Street.
  • Detailed visual bridge inspections of all pedestrian and vehicular bridges have commenced and inspectors will be out on city bridges for the duration of the summer. In some cases, lanes of traffic may be closed to facilitate inspections.
  • Bay Street from Secord Street to Dixon Street will be closed to allow for the reconstruction of the sanitary sewer, watermain, installation of a new storm sewer as well as new curb and gutter, sidewalks and resurfacing.
  • Storm Sewer construction on Rosslyn Road from Neebing Avenue to the 15th Side Road.  Lane closures and detours will be in effect as the work proceeds.

The City of Thunder Bay’s Active Transportation Plan will see the first dedicated bike lanes along Court Street between Fort William Road and Gibson Street operational this month. New parking restrictions will be in effect in some areas from May 1 to Nov. 14. Watch for signage and new pavement markings. Future work on the Active Transportation Plan includes dedicated bike lanes on Walsh Street from James Street to Syndicate Avenue and on Syndicate Avenue from Brock Street to Walsh Street. Shared bike lanes are planned for the entire length of Fassina Street and along John Street from Junot to Algonquin Avenue.

The above list includes major, traffic-affecting construction only. Work including sidewalk replacements is also proceeding in residential areas and other areas around the City. The schedule is subject to change. Watch for monthly, updated information on construction work within the City.
