Road Work Ahead


August 19, 2010 – Road construction projects underway in Thunder Bay can result in road closures, detours and delays for drivers. Watch for signage and please drive with extra care in construction zones.

The following areas are scheduled for road and other major infrastructure work expected to affect traffic between Aug. 19 and Sept. 16, 2010. The City’s Capital Budget provides funding for these projects. Some of this year’s construction projects, including road and bridge work, are funded in part, through the Federal Gas Tax Program.

Temporary street closures will be in effect:

  • Friday, Aug. 20 from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm. Syndicate Avenue between Miles Street and the Victoriaville Mall will be closed for a Cleansing Ceremony on the grounds of the future Thunder Bay Consolidated Court House.
  • Saturday, Aug. 28 from 7 am to 5:30 pm. Frederica Street from 135 East Frederica St. to 218 West Frederica St, including the intersections of Edward Street and Brown Street, and Brown Street North of Frederica to approximately 1515 Brown St. will be closed for the Westfort Village Street Fair.
  • Saturday, Sept. 11 from 9 am to 1 pm. Atlantic Avenue from McLeod Street to 110th Avenue will be closed for Strides for Change – Mothers Against Drunk Drivers.
  • Saturday, Sept. 11 from 8 am to 6 pm. Victoria Avenue from Brodie Street to Simpson Street, May Street from Miles Street to Donald Street, Simpson Street from Miles Street to Arthur Street, Syndicate Avenue North from Miles Street to Leith Street, and George Street from May Street to Simpson Street will all be closed for the Fort William Fall Street Festival.

Road Work Ahead:

  • Road work on Walsh Street from Kingsway Street to Edward Street, and Harold Street from Miles Street to Victoria Avenue. Expect detours, lane closures and possible driveway access restrictions in some locations. 
  • Machar Avenue from Bay Street to Wilson Street will be closed to local traffic to allow for the reconstruction of the sanitary sewer and existing watermain.
  • Detailed visual bridge inspections of all pedestrian and vehicular bridges are ongoing and inspectors will be out on city bridges for the duration of the summer. In some cases, lanes of traffic may be closed to facilitate inspections.
  • Road repaving work is scheduled on Tarbutt Street and East Francis Street. Local access only during construction.
  • Road pavement inspections across the city will begin next week.
  • Sidewalk replacement is scheduled for Northern Avenue from Vickers Street to May Street. The sidewalk will be closed during construction and some driveway access will be disrupted. Parking and lane closures will occur.
  • Bay Street from Secord Street to Dixon Street will be closed to allow for the reconstruction of the sanitary sewer, watermain, installation of a new storm sewer as well as new curb and gutter, sidewalks and resurfacing.
  • Storm Sewer construction on Rosslyn Road from Neebing Avenue to the 15th Side Road.  Lane closures and detours will be in effect as the work proceeds.
  • Nugent Street from Villa Street to McVicar Street will be closed to allow for the reconstruction of the sanitary sewer, watermain, new curb and gutter resurfacing.
  • Dawson Street from Algoma Street to Peter Street will be closed to allow for the reconstruction of the sanitary sewer and existing watermain, complete with new curb and gutter, sidewalks where necessary and resurfacing.
  • McDonald Street from McGillivary Street to McNaughton Street will be closed to local traffic to allow for the reconstruction of the sanitary sewer and existing watermain, complete with new curb and gutter, sidewalks where necessary and resurfacing.
  • Sanitary sewer lining will be taking place in various locations throughout the city, please drive carefully in these zones and follow road signage.

The above list includes major, traffic-affecting construction only. Work including sidewalk replacements is also proceeding in residential areas and other areas around the city. The schedule is subject to change. Watch for monthly, updated information on construction work within the city.
