Road Work Ahead

May 20, 2011 – Warmer weather has arrived and with it the beginning of construction season. There are a number of major projects in the works for this year, along with smaller public works enhancements. Projects include road and sidewalk rehabilitation, sanitary and storm sewer and water main replacements, bridge work and streetlight renewal. Several projects are already underway. These projects are funded by the City’s Capital Budget and some receive additional funding in part through the Federal Gas Tax Program.

Road work can result in road closures, detours and delays for drivers. Watch for signage and please drive with extra care in construction zones.

The following areas are scheduled for road and other major infrastructure work expected to affect traffic during the period from May 19 to June 16, 2011.

Temporary street closures will be in effect:

  • Monday, May 23, from 8 am to 12 noon, along May Street from Arthur Street to Donald Street, Arthur Street from Brodie Street to May Street, and a complete street closure from the intersection of Simpson /Arthur/May north along Simpson Street to Fort William Road, to Water Street, to the Marina Park Overpass, then through Marina Park and returning along the same route for the Firefighters’ 10 Mile Road Race.
  • Friday, June 3, from 6 pm to Sunday, June 5, 6 pm, Waverly Street from Red River Road to Banning Street, and Saturday, June 4, from 6 am to 8 pm and Sunday, June 5, from 12:30 pm to
    6 pm Waverly Street from Banning to Algoma Street will be closed for the George Jeffrey Soap Box Races.
  • Wednesday, June 15, from 1:20 pm to 2:15 pm the West lane of Madeline Street from the Grandview Arena to the Thunder Bay 55+ Centre at 600 River St. will be closed for the Seniors’ Rock Walk.

Road Work Ahead:

Sewer & Watermain Work

  • Queen Street between Winnipeg Avenue and Ontario Street will be closed to local traffic to allow for the reconstruction of the watermain complete with new curb, gutter and resurfacing.
  • River Road from Marks Street to the dead end will be closed to through traffic to allow for servicing existing houses with a newly installed watermain.  Parking restrictions and lane closures will occur.
  • Dawson Street from Jean Street to Peter Street will be closed to allow for the reconstruction of the sanitary sewer and existing watermain, complete with new curb, gutter, sidewalks (where necessary) and resurfacing.
  • Rossyln Road from Neebing Avenue to 15th Side Road is scheduled for storm sewer construction and final paving. Watch for one lane traffic control/flagging as the work proceeds.

Bridge Work

  • Rehabilitation work on James Street Bridge will commence in the middle of May and last through the construction season.  During construction, traffic will be narrowed to two lanes, and left turns on Riverside Drive and Parkway Drive may be restricted. Please follow posted detour and construction signage as required.

Road, Street Lighting & Sidewalk Improvements

  • Harold Street from Victoria Avenue to Miles Street will be closed to through traffic to allow for the reconstruction of the existing sidewalks and street lighting along with top lift paving.
  • Balsam Street and Shuniah Street are scheduled for curb repair and repaving. Expect gravel surface, lane closures and driveway disruptions as the work proceeds.
  • Road reconstruction on Hogarth Street, Hogarth Place and Hinton Avenue is scheduled in Grandview Gardens. Local access only, driveway interruptions are possible. Work includes road base, curbing, sidewalk, lighting and paving.
  • Local paving work scheduled for Regina Avenue, Rita Street, Blaquier Avenue and Tupper Street. Local access only.
  • Government Road between the McIntyre River and Community Hall Road is scheduled for repaving. Watch for gravel surface and lane closures as the work proceeds.
  • Sidewalk replacement is scheduled for North Brodie Street and East Frederica Street. The sidewalk will be closed during construction and some driveway access will be disrupted. Parking and lane closures may occur.
  • Miscellaneous paving repair on sections of Edward Street, James Street and Balmoral Street. Watch for construction signage and temporary lane closures.

Road Capacity Improvements

  • Road work is under way to construct the extension of Premier Way intersecting with the Harbour Expressway. Work will include the extension of the westbound right turn lane on the Harbour Expressway which will require a closure of the northernmost lane. Follow posted signage.

The above list includes major, traffic-affecting construction only. Work including sidewalk replacements is also proceeding in residential areas and other areas around the City. The schedule is subject to change. Watch for monthly, updated information on construction work within the City.
