Road Work Ahead


June 16, 2011 – Road construction projects underway in Thunder Bay can result in road closures, detours and delays for drivers. Watch for signage and please drive with extra care in construction zones. Projects include road and sidewalk rehabilitation, sanitary and storm sewer and water main replacements, bridge work and streetlight renewal. These projects are funded by the City’s Capital Budget and some receive additional funding in part through the Federal Gas Tax Program.

The following areas are scheduled for road and other major infrastructure work expected to affect traffic during the period from June 17 until July 21, 2011.

Temporary street closures will be in effect:
• Sunday, June 26 from 10 am until 2 pm, Archibald Street South from Donald Street to 208 S. Archibald Street for the St. Patrick’s Cathedral Parish Picnic. 
• Friday, July 1 from 12 noon until midnight, Water Street from Park Avenue to Cumberland Street North; Lorne Street at Cumberland Street; Van Norman Street from Cumberland Street to Water Street; Camelot Street from Cumberland Street to Water Street, Tupper Street from the East side of the McDonalds parking lot to Water Street; Villa Street from Cumberland Street to Water Street; Howe Street from Cumberland Street to Water Street; Cumberland Street from Van Norman Street to Camelot Street; Marina Park Overpass closed to the public, for Canada Day Celebrations. 
• Friday, July 1 from 4 am to 11:59 pm Park Avenue from Court Street to Cumberland Street will be closed for Cruiser Day.
• Thursday, July 7 at 6 am to Monday, July 11 at 6 pm, Bobby Curtola Drive from Marina Park Overpass to Prince Arthur’s Landing and Saul Laskin Drive from Bobby Curtola Drive to Bobby Curtola Drive, will be closed for the Blues Festival. 

Road Work Ahead:

Sewer & Watermain Work
• Queen Street between Winnipeg Avenue and Ontario Street will be closed to local traffic to allow for the reconstruction of the watermain complete with new curb, gutter and resurfacing.
• River Road from Marks Street to the dead end will be closed to through traffic to allow for servicing existing houses with a newly installed watermain.  Parking restrictions and lane closures will occur.
• Dawson Street from Jean Street to Peter Street will be closed to allow for the reconstruction of the sanitary sewer and existing watermain, complete with new curb, gutter, sidewalks (where necessary) and resurfacing.
• Rossyln Road from Neebing Avenue to 15th Side Road is scheduled for storm sewer construction and final paving. Watch for one-lane traffic control/flagging as the work proceeds.
• Walsh Street between Leland Avenue and Beaverhall Place is scheduled for watermain, storm sewer and road paving. Local access only through the construction area.
• Brodie Street between Ridgeway Street and Donald Street is scheduled for sewer and water replacement and road repaving. The street will be closed to traffic. City Transit using Brodie Street will be temporarily re-routed during the construction.

Bridge Work
• Rehabilitation work on James Street Bridge will commence in the middle of May and continue through the construction season.  During construction, traffic will be narrowed to two lanes, and left turns on Riverside Drive and Parkway Drive may be restricted. Please follow posted detour and construction signage as required.

Road, Street Lighting & Sidewalk Improvements
• Harold Street from Victoria Avenue to Miles Street will be closed to through traffic to allow for the reconstruction of the existing sidewalks and street lighting along with top lift paving.
• Balsam Street and Shuniah Street are scheduled for curb repair and repaving. Expect gravel surface, lane closures and driveway disruptions as the work proceeds.
• Road reconstruction on Hogarth Street, Hogarth Place and Hinton Avenue is scheduled in Grandview Gardens. Local access only, driveway interruptions are possible. Work includes road base, curbing, sidewalk, lighting and paving.
• Local paving work scheduled for Blaquier Avenue and Tupper Street. Local access only.
• Government Road between the McIntyre River and Community Hall Road is scheduled for repaving. Watch for gravel surface and lane closures as the work proceeds.
• Sidewalk replacement projects are scheduled for Athabasca Street, Harkness Street and McIntosh Street.
• Sidewalk replacement is ongoing on East Frederica Street. The sidewalk will be closed during construction and some driveway access will be disrupted. Parking restrictions and lane closures may occur.
• Miscellaneous paving repair on sections of Edward Street, James Street and Balmoral Street.  Watch for construction signage and temporary lane closures.

The above list includes major, traffic-affecting construction only. Work including sidewalk replacements is also proceeding in residential areas and other areas around the City. The schedule is subject to change. Watch for monthly, updated information on construction work within the City.
