Road Work Ahead


June 26, 2009 – Road construction projects underway in Thunder Bay can result in road closures, detours and delays for drivers. Watch for signage and please drive with extra care in construction zones.

The following areas are scheduled for road and other major infrastructure work expected to affect traffic during the period from June 25 to July 23, 2009. The City’s Capital Budget provides funding for these projects. Some of this year’s construction projects, including road and bridge work, are funded in part, through the Federal Gas Tax Program and Provincial Municipal Infrastructure Investment Initiative.

Temporary street closures will be in effect:
• Saturdays beginning May 2 to Oct. 31 from 8 am to 5 pm, Victoria Avenue East from May Street to Brodie Street for the Victoria Avenue Downtown Farmers’ Market.
• Every Wednesday from June 24 to August 19 (with the exception of July 1) from 5 pm to 9 pm Bobby Curtola Drive from the CN Station Parking Lot to the base of the Overpass and Saul Laskin Drive will be closed for Summer in the Parks events.
• Wednesday, July 1 from 3 pm to midnight Water Street from South to North Cumberland Street and Bobby Curtola Drive from Pearl Street to the Marina Park Overpass Canada Day Celebration and Parade.
• Wednesday, July 1 from 5 pm to 7 pm Fort Willilam Road from First Avenue to South Cumberland Street for the Canada Day Celebration and Parade.
• Thursday, July 2 from p am to Thursday, July 9 at 6 pm Bobby Curtola Drive from the Overpass to Prince Arthur’s Landing and Saul Laskin Drive from Bobby Curtola Drive to Bobby Curtola Drive will be closed for the Thunder Bay Blues Festival.
• Friday, July 10 from 4 pm to 1 am, Saturday, July 11 from noon to 1 am and Sunday July 12 from noon until 1 am, Waterloo Street from Arthur Street to Ridgeway Street with ‘local traffic only’ signage at Walsh Street for the Thunder Fest Super Weekend (Italian Family Festival).
• Friday, July 17 from 3 pm to midnight and Saturday, July 18 from 7 am to midnight Lyon Boulevard from Algoma Street to Arundel Street for the Dragon Boat Races & Festival.
• 

Road Work Ahead:
• $1.5 million Balmoral Street Bridge rehabilitation will begin in mid May and last through the construction season. Two lanes of traffic will be open along Balmoral Street at reduced speeds. Access to Forest Street from Balmoral Street will be closed during the duration of the project. Please follow the posted detours. This project includes a wider pedestrian/cycle pathway on the west side of the bridge. 
• Asphalt resurfacing on Fassina Street, Government Road, Hilldale Road and Tupper Street, Local access only and possible driveway access restrictions.

 

• Road reconstruction on McComber Crescent and Gladman Crescent. Local access only and possible driveway access restrictions.
• Pavement resurfacing on residential streets including Perozak Street, Greengate Circle, 22nd Sideroad, Duke Street, Thistle Crescent, Shamrock Crescent and Rosewood Crescent.
• Road paving and culvert installation on Chapples Drive. Watch for lane closures, gravel surface and detours.
• Milling and paving on Waterloo Street between Victoria Avenue and the Neebing River.
• Road reconstruction and turning lane improvements on Isabel Street. Road closed to through traffic during construction.
• Sidewalk replacement on both sides of Frederica Street in the Westfort Business area. Work to include decorative lighting and boulevard trees.
• New sidewalk construction on Windsor Street.
• Sidewalk replacement on McKellar Street, Mary Street East and Finlayson Street. Pedestrian and driveway access may be affected.
• Traffic signal rebuild project at Cumberland Street and MacDougall Street intersection. Watch for lane closures as the work proceeds.
• Traffic signal rebuild project at Victoria Avenue and James Street.  Watch for lane closures and sidewalk ramp closures as the work proceeds.
• Underground infrastructure work and road restoration on Walsh Street from Edward Street to Leland Avenue and on Wilson Street from Court Street to Cumberland Street.
• Sewer and water construction on Archibald Street between Donald Street and Arthur Street. Possible road closure with local access only from one end.
• Storm Sewer construction includes Phase III of the Intercity Drainage Project which will nearly complete this multi-million dollar drainage improvement project in the Intercity Area.
• The other notable underground infrastructure project currently underway is along Van Norman Street and Brown Street.

The City of Thunder Bay Solid Waste and Recycling Facility development project is nearing completion. The site will be opening late this summer. A methane gas collection project is underway in partnership with Thunder Bay Hydro. Work is also underway to develop an agreement to construct a power generating station and a methane gas heat recovery system that will use the facility’s methane gas as fuel. 

The above list includes major, traffic-affecting construction only. Work including sidewalk replacements is also proceeding in residential areas and other areas around the City. The schedule is subject to change. Watch for monthly, updated information on scheduled ‘Road Work Ahead’.
