Road Work Ahead


August 27, 2009 – Road construction projects underway in Thunder Bay can result in road closures, detours and delays for drivers. Watch for signage and please drive with extra care in construction zones.

The following areas are scheduled for road and other major infrastructure work expected to affect traffic from Aug. 27 to Sept. 24, 2009. The City’s Capital Budget provides funding for these projects. Some of this year’s construction projects, including road and bridge work, are funded in part, through the Federal Gas Tax Program and Provincial Municipal Infrastructure Investment Initiative.

Temporary street closures will be in effect:
• Saturday, Sept. 12 from 7 am to 5 pm, Victoria Avenue from Brodie Street to Simpson Street, May Street from
  Miles Street to Donald Street and Simpson Street from Miles Street to Arthur Street for the Fort William Fall
  Street Festival.
• Sunday, Sept. 20 from 11 am to 4:30 pm, Second Avenue from Winnipeg Avenue to Memorial Avenue for the
  AIDS Walk for Life.
• Every Saturday until Oct. 31 from 8 am to 5 pm, Victoria Avenue East from May Street to Brodie Street for the
  Victoria Avenue Downtown Farmers’ Market.

Road Work Ahead:
• $1.5 million Balmoral Street Bridge rehabilitation will began in May and will last through the construction season.
  Two lanes of traffic will be open along Balmoral Street at reduced speeds. Access to Forest Street from Balmoral
  Street will be closed during the duration of the project. Please follow the posted detours. This project includes a
  wider pedestrian/cycle pathway on the west side of the bridge. 
• Pavement resurfacing on Greengate Circle and 22nd Sideroad.
• Machar Avenue from Cornwall Avenue to Bay Street will be under construction for sewer, water, sidewalks and
  complete road restoration.
• Milling and paving on Waterloo Street between Victoria Avenue and the Neebing River.
• Spruce Court will be under construction for new curbing and road widening. Residents to follow posted
  construction signs about redirecting local traffic. Some driveway access interruptions expected.
• Milling and paving on Victoria Avenue between James Street and Mountdale Avenue.
• Eastbound lanes of Dawson Road between Regina and East Avenue scheduled for milling and paving. Watch for
  lane closures and traffic rerouting as the work proceeds.
• Pavement repairs at the James Street subway. Watch for road closure or detour as the work proceeds.
• River Street and Red River Road will have miscellaneous sections of boulevard repair. Watch for closures of the
  curb lane during the construction period.
• May Street between the Neebing /McIntyre Floodway to Northern Avenue is under construction. Watch for lane
  closures, turn restrictions and slower traffic through this area. Businesses open as usual.
• James Street spot milling and pavement repair on southbound lanes - Ryerson Crescent to Mary Street. Watch
  for lane closures, reduced speed and bump locations as the work proceeds.
• Algonquin Street spot milling and pavement repair.
• Traffic signal rebuild project at Cumberland Street and MacDougall Street intersection. Watch for lane closures as
  the work proceeds.
• Traffic signal rebuild project at Victoria Avenue and James Street.  Watch for lane closures and sidewalk ramp
  closures as the work proceeds.
• Lisgar Street is scheduled for sewer and paving work. A portion of the street will remain closed to public access.
• Selkirk Street between Rankin Street and Arthur Street is scheduled for storm sewer construction. Watch for lane
  or block-to-block closures and one-way traffic as work proceeds.
• Machar Avenue from Cornwall Avenue to Bay Street is under construction for sewer, water and road work.
• James Street from Vale Street to Churchill Drive is under construction for watermain, new curb, gutter and asphalt
  work.
• Cobalt Crescent is scheduled for storm sewer, curb and gutter and paving work. Watch for signage directing local
  access to businesses. One end of the street may be closed at times.
• Storm sewer construction includes Phase III of the Intercity Drainage Project which will nearly complete this multi
  million dollar drainage improvement project in the Intercity Area.
• Sewer/water, curb and gutter work on Wilson Street from Court Street to Cumberland Street.  Road closed to
  local traffic only.
• Watermain work on James Street between Vale Crescent and Churchill Drive. Number of lanes will be reduced
  within construction limits.
• James Street at the Mission spur railway crossing will be closed to through traffic from Tuesday, Sept. 22 to
  Thursday, Sept. 24 for track and roadwork. Motorists are requested to use an alternate route. There will be
  southbound access to the swing bridge via Montreal Street only during this period.

The new City of Thunder Bay Solid Waste and Recycling Facility opens on Tuesday, Sept. 1. The entrance to the new site is at 5405 Mapleward Road between John Street Road and Oliver Road. The entrance on John Street Road will be closed. 

The above list includes major, traffic-affecting construction only. Work including sidewalk replacements is also proceeding in residential areas and other areas around the City. The schedule is subject to change. Watch for monthly, updated information on scheduled ‘Road Work Ahead’.
