Snow Banks Present Problems for Garbage Collection

March 11, 2009 – Garbage and recycling collection is underway, but collection may be delayed because of weather conditions.

Residents are reminded that garbage and recycling must be placed at the curb at ground level, not on top of snow banks. Containers must be accessible for pick up and placed off the street to allow for snow removal. Shovel out an area of your driveway and place your garbage at ground level.

“Snow banks were already high and with last night’s snowfall and blowing snow they present a safety hazard for sanitation workers,” said Brian Kral, Acting Manager – Roads Division. “Workers cannot climb banks or dig through snow drifts to retrieve the garbage. Garbage must be placed at ground level at the end of the driveway. If residents prefer, they can shovel a shelf into the snow bank at curb level and place their garbage there.”

Sanitation workers have been instructed not to climb snow banks to retrieve garbage as it is not safe. Residents are advised to check their 2008/2009 Waste Collection Calendar for further information on safely setting out garbage for collection.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
