Summer in the Parks Concert Line-Up Announced

June 16, 2009 – The Recreation & Culture Division announced another fantastic lineup of live entertainment for the 2009 Summer in the Parks concert season today.  Eight outdoor concerts are planned featuring new acts, as well as returning favourites. Concerts take place at Marina Park on the Main Stage under the band-shell on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 9 pm, beginning June 24.

“Summer in the Parks has become one of the most prominent community events throughout the summer that the whole family can enjoy,” said Dave Mossman, Summer in the Parks Coordinator. “We have worked with our Advisory Committee this season to bring a total of 23 acts of various styles and genres to the stage. They are sure to please audiences of all tastes, especially our many themed nights!”

The stage will come to life June 24, when the Roy Coran Jazz Big Band kicks-off the concert season. For roughly 35 years these accomplished musicians have opened the Summer in the Parks season and this year will be no exception. Also performing on stage on opening night will be Mark Potvin’s Little Swing Band; always a crowd favourite.

In addition to great music, Summer in the Parks evenings feature children’s activities, free draws and a variety of on-site concessions. The Downtown Heart of the Harbour BIA will offer ‘Art of the Harbour’, displaying and selling art in the park during the concert series.  ‘Caricatures for Charity’ will also be returning to raise money for Shelter House.

New this year, the public are encouraged to take advantage of the Summer in the Parks Shuttle Bus that will be running from the Heart of the Harbour Parkade on Court Street. Concert goers can flag down the Summer in the Parks Bus anywhere along the route and will be dropped off right at the festival area.  There will be no general parking around the festival area but accessible parking will be available in the Camelot Street Parking lot with a parking permit.
