November 14, 2011 – Representatives from Fort William First Nation, the City of Thunder Bay and the Community Economic Development Commission (CEDC) will meet Wednesday in Cleveland, Ohio, with Cliffs Natural Resources Inc. to present the business case and strategic advantages of Thunder Bay as the future location for a ferrochrome processing facility.

“Our three organizations, known as the Alliance, have partnered in a concerted effort to pursue the ferrochrome processor for Thunder Bay as a catalyst for jobs and business development,” said Mayor Keith Hobbs.

“We’re excited about the opportunity to build on Fort William First Nation’s record for fostering successful businesses in our industrial business park,” said Chief Peter Collins.

The Mayor and Chief Collins are joined on the delegation by Joe Virdiramo (Councillor, City of Thunder Bay), Rob Mace (President, Thunder Bay Hydro), Tim Commisso (City Manager, City of Thunder Bay), Ed Collins (Economic Development Officer, Fort William First Nation), and John Mason (Project Manager – Mining Services, Thunder Bay CEDC). The partnership also includes Thunder Bay Port Authority.

“Our presentation of the Thunder Bay business case to Cliffs is a key aspect of the City’s broader mining strategy and is among many economic development initiatives aimed at developing the City as a regional centre of exploration and mining,” said John Mason, Project Manager, Mining Services for the CEDC.

The ferrochrome processing facility is one of four components of the Cliffs Chromite Project.  The three other components, which include an integrated transportation system, a mine, and an ore processing facililty, present many opportunities for job creation and business development. The Alliance intends on maintaining a strong relationship with Cliffs and will certainly pursue other opportunities presented by the Chromite Project to help bring jobs to Thunder Bay and region.
